Travel Awards Call 2015

ESERA is offering travel awards of up to 1000 euros each to enable ESERA members who are currently enrolled in doctoral studies or who were awarded their doctorate after 1st January 2012 to travel to research venues. (application and review process now completed)

ESERA is offering travel awards of up to 1000 euros each to enable ESERA members who are currently enrolled in doctoral studies or who were awarded their doctorate after 1st January 2012 to travel to research venues. The awards are intended to enable early career ESERA members to visit more experienced science education researchers in other countries. At least one of the two countries involved in any bid must be within Europe. For 2015 the total award fund is 9000 euros.

The awards are designed for researchers to share existing expertise in order to address an issue of concern in an awardee’s work or to otherwise advance their research efforts. The awards can be used to pay for travel, accommodation and subsistence. Awards are not intended to support attendance at conferences, or visits that are part of an established collaboration between two institutions. The outcomes of previous awardee activities can be seen on the Early Career Researcher – Travel Awards section of the ESERA website.

Applications will be assessed by a three-person panel, including at least two ESERA Executive Board members, on the basis of the following criteria:

  • clarity of intended outcome;
  • feasibility of intended outcome;
  • likely contribution to professional development of applicant.

The assessment process will also ensure a spread of geographic representation across Europe.

If you are interested in applying for an ECR Travel Award, please send an Expression of Interest (EOI) to Jim Ryder (J.Ryder@education.leeds.ac.uk) by 1 December 2014. Successful applicants will be contacted in early January 2015.

The EOI should include the following information: your name, your status as a student or a post-doctoral researcher; your home institution; a short description of your research; your planned destination; the purpose of your journey; and an estimated budget. The EOI should not exceed two pages with at least half a page devoted to the purpose of the proposed journey. The EOI must be counter-signed by a representative of the applicant’s institution and by a representative of the institution that the applicant plans to visit. Electronic signatures are acceptable. Please use the attached template for your proposal.

Applicants must be ESERA members at the time of applying. Travel should take place during 2015. Priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received an ESERA travel award. Successful applicants will be expected to ensure that they are adequately insured.

Awardees are expected to write a report of 2-3 pages for the ESERA website. We also ask that partial support from ESERA be acknowledged in any publications or conference presentations that relate to the travel award.
