On Friday 24th May 2013 our precious colleague and friend, professor emeritus Björn Andersson passed away. Björn worked at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden and was well known in the science education community, nationally and internationally. He had been actively involved in ESERA from its inception.His death was unexpected, although his health had been troubling him for many years. He was aged 74, and never really retired from science education, about which he was passionate. Indeed he had just begun writing a new book for teacher education concerning sustainable development. He was at the forefront of design-based research and teaching and learning sequences in order to improve classroom practice and engage teachers in, and with, research. He will be sadly missed, both in the Nordic science education community and by colleagues further afield.

It is with great sadness within ESERA that we hear of the passing of Björn Andersson. Björn was known to many of us, over many years, as a very active ESERA member, scholar and friend. He was one of the founding members of ESERA and did a great deal to shape its development. Björn was a key member of the Local Organising Committee for the ESERA conference in Malmo, Sweden, in 2007. He will be greatly missed within our community.
