The ESERA SIG9 is launching a new webinar on “Hegemonies in Science Education: A Historical Analysis on Nazi Germany Science Textbooks” by Felipe Sanches Lopez from University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. In recent decades, educational reforms across different countries have reflected not only pedagogical demands but also broader ideological disputes and political reconfiguration. To better understand the political role of science education in such processes, this seminar will examine a historical moment in which it was mobilised for the construction and maintenance of hegemonic projects, grounded in a Gramscian perspective. In this webinar we will examine the context of Nazi Germany, where curricular reforms reconfigured science teaching as an instrument for ideological alignment and war preparation. The analysis of educational materials demonstrates how the myriads of different interacting activity systems articulated science, nationalism, and antisemitism, contributing to the construction of a worldview consistent with the regime’s political project. By linking these historical episodes to contemporary educational reforms, this seminar proposes a reflection on the relationships between science, education, and hegemony.
