From June 4th to June 9th, forty nine PhD students from 16 countries and seventeen staff members from 10 countries took part in the ESERA Summer School 2019, which was held in the seaside village of Kolymbari in the region of Chania, Crete, organized by the Science Teaching Laboratory of the School of Education of the University of Crete, Greece.
During the Summer School, the PhD students had the opportunity:
a) to present their work to peers in groups of seven, under the supervision of two mentors
b) to attend 5 plenary lectures (one of these has been held by the first ESERA President Prof. Dimitris Psillos from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece as invited speaker)
c) to choose among seven workshops, each of them offered twice, discussing different theoretical and methodological approaches as well as issues regarding academic writing in science education
d) to present their work in two poster sessions, under the supervision of three roving mentors
e) to come in touch with the local culture via an excursion in the city of Chania as well as via the conference dinner which included traditional music and dancing. From the feedback that we have already received from the PhD participants through a “feedback form” as well as from the final discussion in the staff members’ meeting, it could be asserted that in the Summer School in Crete thetradition of a continuous development of the ESERA Summer Schools was carried on.
