ESERA Summer School 2025

The ESERA Summer School 2025 has taken place in Almeria in the Southest of Spain from June 9th to June 14th 2025, hosted by the EIDUAL (International PhD School) at the University of Almeria. This edition of the ESERA Summer School is jointly organised by three nearby universities (Málaga-Jaén-Almería). This consortium of universities has been collaborating for some time on research projects and publications.

Gathering 49 doctoral students from different countries around the world together with 14 mentors in a truly inspiring and collaborative environment. Participants were divided into seven mentorship groups, guided by the support and expertise of Virginie Albe, Jaume Ametller, Eliza Rybska, Justin Dillon, Robert Evans, Cristina García Ruiz, Veli-Matti Vesterinen, Elisa Vilhunen, Lukas Rokos, Betzabé Torres, Renee Schwartz, Pedro Reis, Italo Testa, and Sara Wilmes.

Beyond being an academic event, the school quickly became a warm community where participants felt at home, forging not only professional networks but also friendships that will last a lifetime.

Throughout the week, students presented their research in small groups and poster sessions, which encouraged constructive feedback, vibrant discussions, and the exchange of diverse perspectives. Six open discussions enriched the academic program, addressing emerging issues in science education; as well as six workshops that combined practical skills with methodological and ethical reflections.

Yet, what made this summer school truly unique was the sense of family that emerged from the very first day. Group dynamics broke the ice immediately, creating a joyful atmosphere that continued throughout the week. Shared activities, such as a boat trip along the coast of Almería, snorkelling, a guided city tour, and evening shows after dinner brought everyone closer together. These moments of laughter, discovery, and cultural immersion made the bonds between participants even stronger.

In the end, ESERA Summer School in Almería was much more than an academic gathering. It was a week of growth, connection, and celebration of what it means to belong to a global community of researchers in science education.
